HDD Symptoms

What is your hard drive doing?

HDD failures don’t all have the same cause. The symptom helps us determine whether the problem is electrical, mechanical, firmware-related, or caused by damaged media.

01

HDD not detected

Drive doesn’t appear in BIOS, Windows, Disk Management, macOS, or your external enclosure.

02

Clicking or ticking

Repetitive clicking can indicate read/write head failure, platter access problems, or firmware faults.

03

Drive not spinning

No vibration or spin-up when power is connected. Possible PCB, motor, or electrical failure.

04

Wrong capacity / 0GB

A drive showing 0GB or an incorrect size may have firmware or service-area corruption.

05

Very slow HDD

Freezing, extremely slow transfers and read errors can indicate bad sectors or deteriorating platter surfaces.

06

Burnt or physically damaged

Power surges, damaged connectors, drops and impact can cause PCB and internal mechanical damage.

Repair Capabilities

We repair the fault before we attempt recovery.

A failing drive must first be made stable enough to read. Our repair process is designed around safely extracting your data — not returning the damaged drive to everyday use.

01

PCB & Electrical Repair

Diagnosis and repair of burnt boards, damaged power circuits, shorted components and failed HDD electronics. Where a donor PCB is required, ROM or adaptive firmware data is transferred from the original drive.

02

Read / Write Head Replacement

Damaged head assemblies can cause clicking, scratching or failed reads. A compatible donor head assembly is installed before controlled imaging is attempted.

03

Motor & Mechanical Repair

Repair procedures for seized spindle motors, stuck heads, platter-access problems and other internal mechanical failures requiring controlled physical intervention.

04

Firmware Repair

Diagnosis and repair of corrupted firmware modules, service-area faults, translator problems and drives reporting incorrect identification or capacity.

05

Bad Sector Recovery

Controlled sector-by-sector imaging prioritizes readable areas while minimizing unnecessary retries against damaged regions of the platter.

06

Donor Drive Matching

Compatible donor parts are selected based on model, firmware, PCB revision, head map and other drive-specific parameters rather than blindly swapping components.

Before you do anything

A failed HDD can get worse every time you power it on.

×

Don’t repeatedly restart or reconnect a clicking drive.

×

Don’t run CHKDSK, formatting tools or repair utilities when the drive contains important data.

×

Don’t open the HDD casing outside an appropriate controlled environment.

×

Don’t swap PCBs blindly. HDD boards can contain drive-specific adaptive information.

×

If the data matters, stop using the drive and have the fault diagnosed before attempting DIY recovery.

Recovery Process

Diagnose. Repair. Stabilize. Recover.

We don’t treat every failed hard drive the same. The repair procedure depends on what actually failed.

01

Diagnosis

Identify electrical, firmware, head, motor, platter or sector-level failure.

02

Repair

Perform the required PCB, firmware or mechanical intervention using compatible components.

03

Stabilize

Verify that the drive can be accessed safely enough to begin controlled sector imaging.

04

Recover

Image the drive and extract the required files from the recovered copy rather than the failing original.

No Data, No Fee

Your recovery result comes first.

If the drive requires repair as part of the recovery procedure, that work is performed to make data extraction possible. If your targeted data cannot be recovered under our No Data, No Fee policy, you pay nothing.

HDD Repair FAQ

Before sending us your hard drive.

Can a completely dead hard drive be repaired?

In many cases, yes. A drive that appears completely dead may have a PCB, power-delivery, firmware or motor fault. The exact cause needs to be diagnosed before determining whether recovery is possible.

Can you repair a clicking hard drive?

Clicking can indicate damaged read/write heads, firmware problems or media-related issues. Avoid repeatedly powering on the drive because damaged heads can cause additional platter damage.

Will the repaired HDD work normally again?

Our repair procedures are primarily intended to stabilize a failed drive long enough to recover its data. A mechanically failed drive should generally not be trusted for continued everyday storage after recovery.

Can you repair external hard drives?

Yes. External HDD failures may involve the USB enclosure, USB-to-SATA bridge, PCB, firmware or the internal hard drive itself.

Do you repair laptop and desktop HDDs?

Yes. We handle common 2.5-inch laptop drives, 3.5-inch desktop drives and external hard drives from major HDD manufacturers.

Should I run recovery software first?

Recovery software can be appropriate for some logical failures, but it should not be repeatedly used against a drive showing physical symptoms such as clicking, disappearing, extreme slowness or read errors.

Don’t keep powering on a failing hard drive.
