What is your SSD doing?

Unlike mechanical hard drives, SSDs can fail without warning. A completely dead SSD doesn’t necessarily mean the NAND flash containing your data has been destroyed.

SSD not detected

The SSD doesn’t appear in BIOS, Windows, macOS or Disk Management despite being properly connected.

SSD shows 0GB

The drive is recognized but reports zero or incorrect capacity, which may indicate controller, firmware or translation-layer failure.

No detection or response from the drive. Power circuitry, controller or another board-level component may have failed.

Questions about failed SSDs.

Can data be recovered from a completely dead SSD?

Potentially. A completely dead SSD may have failed power circuitry, a damaged controller, firmware problems or other board-level faults while the NAND containing the data remains intact. The drive needs to be diagnosed before recoverability can be determined.

Can you recover data from an NVMe SSD?

NVMe drives can be diagnosed for controller, firmware, electrical and NAND-related failures. Recovery options depend heavily on the SSD model, controller architecture, encryption and the nature of the failure.

Why does my SSD show 0GB?

An SSD reporting zero capacity can indicate controller initialization problems, firmware corruption or failure of the flash translation layer responsible for mapping logical addresses to physical NAND locations.

Can you repair an SSD and make it usable again?

Our repair work is primarily performed to regain stable access for data recovery. An SSD that has suffered a serious controller, NAND or electrical failure should generally not be trusted as primary storage afterward.

Can deleted files be recovered from an SSD?

SSD deletion is different from HDD deletion because operating systems and SSDs may use TRIM. Once TRIM and internal garbage collection have erased the underlying NAND pages, deleted data may no longer be recoverable. The outcome depends on the specific SSD and what happened after deletion.

Should I keep trying recovery software?

If the SSD is healthy and the problem is purely logical, software may be appropriate. If the SSD disconnects, freezes, overheats, disappears or produces read errors, repeated scans can place additional stress on an already unstable device.
